The LOTE Assembly
| What a treat is was to witness first hand
our children's progress in Japanese. Terayama-sensei, Suzuki-sensei, MCs
Steven and Jess and the Year 7 class, led us on a wonderful journey
through Japanese customs, culture and favourite activities. Following the formal Japanese greetings, we observed the traditional Aussie custom of singing the National Anthem, and saying the School Creed.
Steven and Jess alternated throughout the Assembly, Steven speaking Japanese and Jess providing the English translation. The entertainment commenced with "The Frog's Chorus", a favourite song of all year levels. The Year 7s cued and assisted us with Japanese characters and the Year 5/6s cleverly came in late to sing a 'round'.
Next came an origami (paper folding) demonstration by Jessie, Ryan and Suzuki-sensei. They showed us how to make a large jumping frog.
Then Aaron and Mitchell had a frog jumping contest. Can you pick the winner? Mitchell-Katta!
The winners of the 2006 Frog Jumping Contest received special awards, presented in the traditional Japanese manner by Suzuki-sensei and they were able to respond in the traditional Japanese way too.
Mr Smith then presented the class Merit Award winners with their certificates.
The final song was to celebrate Dampier Primary's 40th Anniversary, the Japanese version of "Happy Birthday". Hip hip, Banzai! And "Hip, Hip Banzai, Terayama-sensei and Suzuki-sensei!"
