"Life in the Middle Ages" Assembly Our classroom was abuzz with excitement on the day of our Assembly, everyone looked wonderful and we just needed a few last minute instructions.
As soon as we walked downstairs to the Undercover Area, daily life in and around Hampton Court Castle commenced. The blacksmith started hammering away, the knights were instructing their students, the jester was moving around keeping everyone amused, the servants went about their household duties and the peasants toiled away in the fields.
James, the Steward, announced the eminent arrival of Lord and Lady Hampton, the young Lady Chiara and their attendants.
We had to stand for their entrance down the aisle then remain standing for the National Anthem.
James's good wife Shona led us into the School Creed.
Then each of the characters stepped forward, introduced themselves and told us a little about their lives. Lord and Lady Hampton and the young Lady Chiara were first. They lived very privileged lives and had servants waiting on them hand and foot but the young Lady was most unhappy about being promised to the old man in the castle next door.
Their attendants told us that while they lived well inside the castle, there were drawbacks, like sleeping on the floor and being spoken to brusquely.
The Knights were next. Josh and Tyler explained jousting to us and emphasised how dangerous it was. Then they demonstrated it. It is an exciting event which everyone in the Court enjoys watching.
The young knights learn their Court manners from Lady Hampton and the Steward's wife and their fighting skills from the knights. Marley, the page, explained why he needed to learn how to fire a bow and arrow well, then the older squires told us what they were learning and showed off their sword fighting skills.
