~The Great Cotton Ball Challenge ~ As part of our Homework this week, we had "The Great Cotton Ball Challenge". Here's the design brief: You know how hard it was to move the cotton ball any real distance when we did the Shot Putt Puff in the Pilbara Pentathlon. Your challenge is to come up with a way to move the cotton ball as quickly and as far as possible in one go (and it must leave your hand). You may think of and use any means you like. You may use an object to help you (fastening not included as object). Discuss it with your parents but not your classmates. Keep your idea a surprise. We will measure your efforts on Thursday at 1.00 pm. Parents are most welcome to assist! We had a great variation of ideas ranging from wetting to weighting to slinging. Weighted objects included various sized balls, eg. cricket, rubber, tennis and golf balls, a marble, a sinker, a pool toy and a coin. Other objects included a 'dog ball thrower' and a tennis raquet. One enterprising student enlisted the aid of her next door neighbour and his model helicopter. But the most original idea was Jason's. His object was a straw and he just kept moving along on hands and knees blowing. He did strike some turbulence from strong winds which eventually hindered him and they certainly put paid to the helicopter.
Everyone had great fun and the final results were:
Let's hear what some of the contestants thought about their efforts:
