We wanted to make an Egyptian market place for our Assembly. We looked at pictures of what life was like for the Ancient Egyptians, including how the various people dressed and adorned themselves. They would barter or trade for goods, many of these freshly grown on the banks of the Nile. Gaily coloured tents would hold stalls, with merchants 'hawking' their wares. Wealthy women would watch everything in luxurious surroundings, with servants attending their every need. We were going to have Queen Nefertiti pay a visit so we needed to fanfare her arrival and pay her appropriate respect. It was a bit confusing when we first started practising but by Assembly day, everyone knew exactly what they had to do and when to do it. Keah was a stunning looking Egyptian lady and Bradley was her husband and co presenter. Bradley asked the audience to close their eyes and took them back to Tel Al Armana over 3300 years ago.
The rest of the class was 'off stage' awaiting their cue. When "Walk Like An Egyptian" was played the action commenced. In the time it took the song to finish, the Market was constructed and stallholders were busily showing off their wares, like Dior with her Queen Nefertiti plate and the fruit merchants with their produce.
Then Queen Nefertiti, wife of Akhenaton, arrived with her attendants.
We displayed our names written in Hieroglyphics and demonstrated how you need to focus on sounds, not letters, to introduce Miss Walker and Mr Verbeek in Ancient Egyptian script. Finally we introduced our audience to "King Cluck", the chicken we are endeavouring to mummify. Strangely enough, we were not overrun with volunteers to do the "whiff test". Bravest of the brave was Megan's Nana, Audrey Gray, who said it almost smelled good enough to eat, even after sixteen days without refrigeration. We also showed Cluck's gorgeous sarcophagus (coffin) and cartouche (nameplate).
Everyone had their special part to play:
Everyone was thrilled with our performance. Here's the whole Egyptian gang in the big tent for the Post Assembly 'camera shoot'.
What a blast!
