~The Problem of Glass ~

After our involvement in the Clean Up Australia Day campaign, we discovered that Dampier has a glass problem. We took a container for 'sharps' with us but quickly filled that and had to deal with the rest the best way we could. Thank goodness we were all wearing gloves. The other groups had a similar problem so we wondered just why there was so much glass, which were the worst affected areas, who did we think was to blame and what could we do about it.

At the moment we are working on PowerPoint displays, presenting our thoughts on a current affairs program called 'Dampier Sunrise'. We even have our own theme music.

To make sure we looked at the 'bigger' picture we invited in three guest speakers: Mrs Lynny Nel from the Dampier Community Association, Mrs Jenny Fox, the Clean Up Australia Day & Tidy Towns Co-ordinator and Constable Fitzmaurice from the Dampier Police Station.

This is what they had to say to our searching questions:

It is a bit disgusting at the moment.

The worst areas seem to be both the ovals and around the edge of the Skate Park.

It's not Primary students so much but teenagers and adults.

Some people are treating the Recycling area like a rubbish tip.

We've got to get the message through to people somehow, make them feel guilty.

It's pretty bad at the moment.

The worst areas are probably down by the Boat Ramp and surprisingly, under street lights.

Teenagers and adults walking home from parties or the Hotel throw their bottles around.

It's been proved that the more bins you put out, the more rubbish accumulates beside them.

We need to educate drinkers. Street drinking is a big problem.

You're not allowed to drink in public places and you certainly can't walk around the streets drinking.

We talk to people and warn them. Sometimes we take their names and fine them.

We try to get people to carry their packaged alcohol home and then drink it.

The main offenders are young people and adults who don't live here permanently.

We've made posters encouraging people to be more responsible and we'll send these to a DCA Meeting, to see their reaction. They may like to take one or some of our ideas further. Perhaps we'll display them around town then.

We'd like to share our finished PowerPoints with people too, most especially the Shire of Roebourne, the DCA, Police Station and Community Library. We'd like to see more advertising messages on TV, radio and in the newspapers. Cameron  suggested on the big screens at sporting events. Perhaps in Dampier we could have a message on the bottom of the Shark's scoreboard.

Glass is everybody's problem and we all need to do our best to eliminate it.
