"The Knight of
the Kitchen"
Mrs Barron, a storytelling specialist, showed
us some Castle books she found in our local Library and drew our attention
to one particular title, "The Knight of the Kitchen". Then she told us the
story in her own words.
Here's a synopsis of Mrs Baron's story:
| In the days of King Arthur a young
squire, hoping to become a knight, served his apprenticeship in the
castle's kitchen. Sir Kay, a mean older knight, gave him the
nickname "Fair Hands" because of his lily white fingers, bleached no
doubt by their long hours spent in soapy water. One day everyone was
shocked to hear that Dame Lioness had been kidnapped by the four
coloured knights. Fair Hands desperately wanted to go on a
quest to rescue her, which greatly amused the Court, especially Lady
Linnet, but kind Sir Lancelot gave Fair Hands his second best horse
and an old suit of armour. First Fair Hands met and battled with the
Black Knight, finally defeating him and sending him back to King
Arthur for judgment. The Green and Blue Knights were dispatched in
the same manner. At last Fair Hands faced the Red Knight, the
fiercest of the coloured knights. Fair Hands revealed his true
identity but the Red Knight scoffed at the idea of fighting him and
drew his sword, the biggest ever seen and they prepared for
battle... |
Our challenge was to complete the story.
Here are two suggested endings:

ASHLEIGH'S CONTINUATION
The Red Knight pulled out his shiny
sword and said,
"Time to fight Gareth, from noon
till sunset tomorrow. If I win I keep Dame Lioness forever. If you
win, you can rescue her and hand her back to that nasty old
handmaiden, Lady Linnet. Deal?" said the Red Knight.
"Deal," said Gareth.
The Red Knight stepped forward.
"Fight!" he cried.
They fought for two exhausting days
and at first Gareth seemed to be losing. The Red Knight laughed an
evil laugh then said,
"I knew you were a weakling, no one
can ever beat the Red Knight. Moi, ha ha!"
"No!" cried Gareth. "This is my
destiny. I will get her back!" and he sneakily knocked the Red
Knight's sword out of his hands, saving Dame Lioness.
"Go back to King Arthur for your
judgment Weakling, or should I say Boiled Egg!"

TYLER'S
CONTINUATION
The Red Knight lashed
his sword at Gareth but he quickly ducked down and dodged it.
Gareth then lunged off his horse and started another ferocious
battle. They fought for hours until Gareth finished the battle
with a fierce lunge at the Red Knight, which sent him plummeting
to the ground. Gareth sent him back to King Arthur as he had done
with the other knights. Later Gareth and Dame Lioness married and
they set off to live their newly married lives in their own
castle.

This is Ashleigh's
impression of what the Red Knight looked like.

We're looking forward to finding out how the
real story ended but then again, these endings aren't too bad are they?
