Mrs Barron's Storytelling

Once again we were privileged to have Mrs Barron visit our classroom, entrancing us with her storytelling skills.

To fit in with our Olympic theme, Mrs Barron told stories about the struggle some individuals are prepared to make, like the little sparrow from "The Sparrow's Story at the King's Command", the hare from "The Hare and the Tortoise" and the little engine from "The Little Engine That Could". Remember, the Olympic Creed states:

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.

Mrs Barron's final story was Mem Fox's story of Koala Lou...

There was once a baby koala, so soft and round that all who saw her loved her. Her name was Koala Lou. Koala Lou was the first born in a large family. She felt sad because her mother seemed too busy to pay her any attention as she looked after successive new babies.  Koala Lou desperately wanted her mother's attention and especially to be told, "Koala Lou, I do love you." She thought that perhaps, if she won the tree-climbing competition at the Bush Olympics, her mother might notice her again . . . Koala Lou started her training right away! Finally the day arrived and she lined up against her neighbour, that tough little Koala Claws.

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

But that was where Mrs Barron stopped and challenged us to write our own endings.

~ MIKAYLA'S ENDING ~

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

"Go Koala Lou!" screamed her Mum.

"I can do it, I can do it!" exclaimed Koala Lou.

"I'm winning and Koala Lou is coming second. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!" said Koala Claws. "I hope she falls," she said in an evil tone.

"At last I've reached the half way point," Koala said in hope that she might reach the top.

"Faster, faster, faster. No, no, no!  Slow and steady is the way," she said to herself.

"I'm at the top!" she said ecstatically.

But still she kept going. Koala Lou went further than she was ever meant to go. In fact, she went further even than the adults and set a new record.

"I can't believe it!" said Kookaburra.

"Koala Lou, I really do love you!" said her mother.

~ TIM'S ENDING ~

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

Koala Lou started climbing but she just couldn't catch up! She came second, climbing 30 metres in 90 seconds and won the silver gum leaf.

"Koala Lou, I do love you!" said her Mum in a loving voice.

Koala Claws got first place and received the golden gum leaf and a trophy.

~ CALLUM K'S ENDING ~

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

Koala Lou shot up the tree like a rocket, way faster than Koala Claws. Koala Lou climbed 20 metres in 22 seconds.

Her Mum yelled, "Koala Lou, I do love you. You're the best!

You've won, you're so good. You've got the gold medal!"

~ CAITLIN'S ENDING ~

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

Koala Lou's mother shouted, "Koala Lou, I do love you!"

Koala Lou heard her so she sped up the tree. There was seven metres to go. She was still going really fast. She was losing her energy but she gave it all she had. At the end of the race, Koala Lou had come in second place. Koala Lou's Mum  came and hugged her and cried:

"Koala Lou, I do love you!"

Koala Lou cried, "That's all I ever wanted you to say."

Then all her brothers and sisters said, "Koala Lou, we love you too!"

~ EMMA-JANE'S ENDING ~

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

Koala Lou shot off in a flash. She'd just gone past Koala Claws when she felt a scratch down her back and fell to the ground. Her Mum raced to the tree and caught her just before she hit the ground.

"Koala Lou, I don't care if you win or not, I know how hard you tried and I do love you!"

Meanwhile, Koala Claws had a piece of fur in his claws.

Can you figure out who scratched Koala Lou? Well, I certainly know who did- Koala Claws!

~ ELLA'S ENDING ~

"Ready, set, go!" shouted Kookaburra.

Koala Lou took her time climbing but Koala Claws was going too fast. She got up the tall tree , climbing 22 metres in 70 seconds. When she got to the top, she started climbing back down. She overtook Koala Claws and won the competition. She was so puffed.

She ran to her Mum and her Mum yelled, "Koala Lou, I do love you!"

She even won a gold medal.
