Pilbara Pentathlon A Pentathlon is an Olympic games event, comprising 5 different disciplines: target shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian Show Jumping and cross-country running. Ours is similar in that it has 5 different parts to it but our disciplines are: High Jump Stretch
Standing Long Jump
Discus Plate Throw
Javelin Straw Throw
and the Shot Putt Puff (cotton wool ball).
Each person was allowed one practise jump or throw then we recorded their next two. Everyone helped out with the measuring and recording in metres and centimetres. They were written as decimal numbers e.g. 2.95, as centimetres are the smaller fraction part of metres. If someone's distance was 3 metres and 5 centimetres, you had to make sure you recorded it like this: 3.05 as 3.5 means something quite different. We used various sized tape measures and metre blackboard rulers, chalk and a great deal of 'common sense'. We also needed to make a few adjustments to our 'field equipment', for instance slightly weighting the tip of the drinking straw javelin.
All of our results were then recorded on a master sheet and our next task was to find first, second and third place getters. Phew, that was quite tricky with all those digits and decimal points! Then Mrs Mitchell worked out an overall winner using the point scale: 10, 7 and 4 for first, second and third. The individual discipline results were:
So, the final results of our Pilbara Pentathlon were:
Well done everyone for taking part (and learning heaps about measuring, recording and co-operating).
